Great dictionary for international students of English
By Gerald Strauch
This is the dictionary I always like to recommend for my students. [...]What are the strong points for the Longman Dictionary? All the definitions are very direct and easy-to-understand. The dictionary uses just 3,000 highly used English words for all the definitions.
Also, this dictionary uses the IPA or International Phonetic Alphabet for the pronunciation guide for each word. The IPA is easier for most all international students to understand, compared to traditional American systems for pronunciation.
Plus, I love the thesaurus that's built-in. And, the usage guide. All these features help make learning English a lot less mysterious. I really like the Longman's dictionary!

Useful for ESL students, fantastic for writers: thorough and clear
By clairdelunatic
Like the reviewer who gave this dictionary one star, I also tutor many ESL students. When they write essays, I often find mistakes in usage, simply because certain connotations aren't clear if you use a dictionary with simplified definitions. Also, many people (not only ESL students) have a hard time deciphering definitions that try too hard to conform to a part of speech.
For example, if I look up the word "incur," most other dictionaries will provide a verb-like definition, e.g., "to become liable or subject to" (m-[...]). It takes some extra mental calculations to figure out how to use such a definition in a good sentence. But Longman's will tell you, in a natural way,
[1] If you incur a cost, debt, fine, etc., you have to pay money because of something that you have done, or you lose money because of something that has happened. [2] If you incur something unpleasant, it happens to you because of something you have done.
With such a definition, I can correctly infer that the word usually takes an object that is negative, and I already know right away what kind of things are commonly "incurred." Longman's sample contexts also provide common ways in which a word is used.
I especially like how an entry often includes common phrases (like idioms or phrasal verbs). For example, the entry for the word "entrance" also makes note of what a "side/back entrance" is, as well as what it means to "gain entrance" to something. The verb
This is the dictionary I always recommend. Whenever students switch to it, I can tell right away just by seeing how many awkward phrases they avoided by choosing the right word. For a thoughtful and sensitive user, this dictionary pays for itself with the embarrassment it can save you. :)
PS: My only qualm with the dictionary is that sometimes its entries are grammatically incorrect for the sake of sounding more natural. I would rather have a dictionary that's clear but ungrammatical, but there are certainly occasions when I have to make certain disclaimers when using a definition like the following:
Indebted: to be grateful to someone for the help they have given you.
(Grammatically, the pronoun "they" should be singular, since it refers to "someone." But the definition gets the job done.)

Useful Dictionary!
By Debbie
This is THE dictionary used by my high school ELL students. It's easy to find the words and the definitions are comprehensible, even for students at the lower levels. We have a set in the classroom, and the media center has another set, also well-used. Many students buy their own copies, and also enjoy the CD, which they share with parents and younger siblings.
