5Compact, Useful and Cost Efficient Chinese-English Dictionary
By Joseph U.
First, the dictionary contains both Chinese-English and English-Chinese sections even though the title states just Chinese-English. A section on character index is included, as well as the introduction that explains abbreviations, etc. I was looking for a smaller portable dictionary besides the larger one I have ordered which is Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary (Oxford Dictionaries).

I am a beginner in learning Chinese and my primary method is by Pimsleur which products are Chinese (Mandarin) I, Mandarin II, and Chinese (Mandarin) III (Compr.) [CD]. After completing Pimsleur Mandalin I, there are many questions I wish answered.

1. The meaning of each chinese character that make up the whole phrase.
2. How each word in a phrase is interrelated to that of a different phrase.
3. How those Chinese characters (simplified) look like.

This dictionary provides those answers. Although there are only 20,000 entries, all the words and phrases I want to look up from Pimsleur Mandalin I are listed. As I get to late intermediate to early advanced level, I will be looking for a more comprehensive Chinese-English dictionary. For now however, this book is adequate.

The price is fair too, in my opinion.

Well recommended to beginner and intermediate Chinese (Mandalin) learner.

UPDATE (16 April 2011)

After finishing all the I, II, and III of Pimsleur Mandalin CDs, I must say not all the words are in the Merriam Chinese Dictionary. Also, I had to check both Chinese-English, English-Chinese sections to look up the words I was looking for. Some struggles to look up, but eventually most are written on the dictionary. Money well spent on this dictionary.

5Easy to Use
By Kia Chia
Arrived very promptly and in good condition (thanks to Amazon Prime). Dictionary has a radicals section, where it will help you look up characters by their radical. Look up words by their Pinyin to English definition. Relatively small and good size for an on-the-go dictionary.

I bought this dictionary for my granddaughter. She is taking Chinese in school. It has been very helpful for her in this class.
