Modern, large print, well published/Nowoczesny, duze litery, dobrze wydany
By Eugene Tenenbaum
A solid 2-volume modern dictionary containing over 80,000 references and 120,000 translations, well designed graphically, published on good white paper, and strong hard-bound. Relatively few words, as for each volume measuring 7 x 9.25 x 1.6 inch (17 x 24 x 4 cm), but easy to read for a large print. Rarely a sentence or phrase example showing the usage of a word in addition to its translation. For finding multiple meanings or of use in sentences or phrases much better is The Great English-Polish Dictionary (ISBN: 8372360480, ISBN: 8372360499, and ASIN: B002H9UDPE), which is cheaper, comprises over 200,000 words, phrases, and expressions on 3 times larger number of pages in 4 volumes of the same handy size and weight in contrast to the very big and heavy volumes of the PWN-Oxford dictionary. All editions from the 1st to the 4th are identical.
Solidny 2-tomowy nowoczesny slownik zawierajacy 80.000 hasel i 120.000 znaczen, dobrze opracowany graficznie, opublikowany na dobrym, bialym papierze, i solidnie oprawiony w twardej okladce.

Best Polish-English dictionary on the market - excellent, modern translations
This dictionary, although difficult to find in the US, is simply the best Polish/English dictionary on the market. I lived and worked in Poland for two years, and spent a lot of that time evaluating dictionaries for use by schools and students. Most dictionaries on the market have outdated translations that provide words no longer in general use, or provide much more "academic" words than the average person is aiming for.
This dictionary clearly translates many meanings of each word. For example the word "pay~" has polish translations for ~(sum of money, bill), ~(person), ~(attention to), ~(somebody a visit). This makes finding the right word a snap.
If you're looking for ANY foreign language dictionary, here's my $0.02:
1) Look at translations of phrasal verbs (verbs that go together with another word, often a preposition). For instance, the translation of "look" should include look, look up, look over (including the meanings of "scan for errors" and "overlook (pass over)", look into, look like, etc.
2) Find a few basic words in your target language that are used slightly differently than in English, for which a direct translation would not be appropriate. For instance, "pretty" in English means beautiful, but also has the common usage of a modification of "very", as in "Her French is pretty good". Find a couple of these in both directions and test the dictionary for how it translates those words. Other words to check from English are "like" (should include "similar" as in "to look like, or be like"), and about (should include the phrase "how about...?").
3) Get a hardcover or rubber-cover if you plan on using your dictionary in another country - they get beat up quickly!
